An Australian first, warning alpine drivers about black ice

Black ice gives a driver no warning. It looks like wet road until the car is already on it. Meshed and ICT International built a system for Transport for NSW that reads the road before the driver reaches it, and puts that warning on signage in time to matter.

In an Australian first, Meshed and ICT International delivered a mission-critical safety solution for Transport for NSW, designed to warn motorists of black ice and difficult driving conditions across the NSW ski resort regions.

A Safety Problem With a Season

The Smart Alpine Project began as an early warning system aimed at significant congestion on the key access roads to the NSW ski resorts. Winter concentrates an entire year of traffic into a few months, on a small number of roads, in the country least forgiving of a mistake.

Two problems compound each other. Drivers meet hazards they cannot see coming, and they arrive at resorts with no way of knowing whether there is anywhere left to park. Both produce the same result, which is vehicles stopped where they should not be.

What Went In on the Roadside

Transport for NSW installed weather stations, people counters and traffic counters, all connected over a reliable LoRaWAN radio network. The choice matters in this terrain. Alpine roadsides have no mains power and patchy mobile coverage, so the equipment has to run on solar and reach a gateway kilometres away through snow and tree cover.

ICT International brought the environmental sensing expertise, Meshed brought the network. Neither half works alone. A perfect reading that cannot get off the mountain is not a warning.

A Warning the Driver Actually Sees

The real-time data is shared with road users through road signage showing the condition of snow and ice on the road, the availability of parking at the ski resorts, and the likelihood that drivers will need to fit snow chains.

That last one is the detail worth pausing on. Telling a driver to fit chains before the climb, rather than after they are stuck on it, changes the whole shape of the problem. The sensing is invisible. The output is three words on a sign, read at speed.

Where the Data Goes

Data for the Smart Alpine Project reports into the Meshed Platform, which provides 24/7 device management and network performance monitoring alongside the readings themselves. For a safety system this is not a nice-to-have. Knowing that a sensor has stopped reporting is as operationally important as the reading it would have sent.

The Platform is also integrated with the NSW Open Data Hub, so the same readings are available beyond the agency that collected them. The pattern echoes what a private network at Shoalhaven Water proved on utility infrastructure. Own the network, keep the data, publish what serves the public.

What the Trial Opened Up

The project drew national attention, with coverage in Roads and Infrastructure Australia, Channel 9 and Inside Local Government. Given the success of the trial, the critical information and early warning approach may be extended to other roads that experience black ice and congestion through the winter months.

Alpine roads are the obvious first case because the hazard is seasonal and concentrated. They are not the only roads in New South Wales where the surface turns dangerous faster than anyone can report it.

A road that can describe its own condition is worth more than a road sign that guesses.
